A thread on r/SolidWorks recently got 44 upvotes and 40 comments: an engineer described how SolidWorks PDF exports include content outside the drawing sheet boundary that is invisible in Adobe Acrobat but becomes visible when the file is opened in Inkscape. One commenter said they spot-checked 50 drawings from their archive — 26 had off-page objects.

This is not a bug or a recent regression. It is how PDF works, and how SolidWorks has always exported drawings. The PDF format stores a complete stream of drawing objects. Standard PDF viewers clip rendering to the declared page boundary (the MediaBox), so content outside the sheet never appears on screen or in print. But the data is physically present in the file. Tools that parse the raw content stream — Inkscape, Illustrator, PDF preflight tools — display everything they find, including geometry outside the sheet.

For most engineering drawing PDFs, this is invisible noise: dangling dimensions from layout experimentation, sketch construction lines, old notes from a previous revision. For some drawings, it is a leak: proprietary geometry, reference dimensions, annotation history.

Why Off-Page Objects Appear

SolidWorks drawings accumulate off-page geometry in several ways:

Sketches placed outside the sheet format. When you use Insert > Sketch on the drawing sheet (as opposed to inside a view), that sketch is tied to the sheet. If you drag sketch entities outside the sheet boundary while working, they persist outside the page even after you close the sketch.

Views moved partially off-sheet. If a drawing view is dragged so that some of its geometry crosses the sheet boundary, those entities end up outside the PDF page. This is common on densely packed sheets where views are repositioned under time pressure.

Legacy content from sheet scale changes. When the drawing format sheet size is changed (A3 → A2, portrait → landscape), existing views may shift relative to the new boundary. Content that was inside the old format may now sit outside the new one.

Annotations and notes. A note placed outside the sheet, a balloon that drifted during an edit, a revision table that was repositioned and left with its tail outside the border.

Import artifacts. Drawing geometry imported from another file (via Insert > DXF/DWG, Insert > Picture, or similar) may include bounding geometry or construction elements that land outside the sheet.

Blocks with geometry outside their registration point. If a custom symbol block has entities at negative coordinates relative to its origin, placing the block near the sheet boundary can put part of it outside the page.

How to See Off-Page Content

In Inkscape

  1. Open Inkscape.
  2. File > Open — select the .pdf file.
  3. In the PDF import dialog, keep the default settings and click OK.
  4. Once imported, zoom out significantly (View > Zoom > Fit Drawing in Window, or press 5).

If off-page geometry exists, you will see it floating outside the page rectangle. The page boundary appears as a white rectangle; any content outside it was invisible in Acrobat.

In Adobe Illustrator

  1. File > Open the PDF (not Place — use Open).
  2. Illustrator imports the PDF as editable artwork.
  3. Use Edit > Select All (Ctrl+A) to select everything on the artboard and outside it.
  4. Objects selected outside the artboard boundary are off-page.

With a PDF preflight tool

Professional PDF preflight tools (Acrobat Pro’s Preflight, Enfocus PitStop) can flag content outside the TrimBox or MediaBox. In Acrobat Pro: Tools > Print Production > Preflight. Look for rules about objects outside the trim area.

How to Find Off-Page Geometry in SolidWorks

Before you can fix it, you need to know it is there.

Visual method

In your SolidWorks drawing, zoom out until you can see well beyond the sheet boundary. Switch to View > Display > Sketch Relations Off to reduce visual noise. Any sketch entities, view bounding boxes, or annotations floating in the grey area outside the sheet rectangle are candidates for deletion.

Use Edit > Select All on the sheet (not inside a view) and then check whether any selected entities are outside the sheet boundary. This is unreliable for entities inside drawing views, since the view itself may be partially on-sheet while some of its content projects off-page.

API macro: find and report all off-page entities

The reliable method uses the SolidWorks API to iterate drawing entities and check their bounding boxes against the sheet boundary.

Option Explicit

Sub FindOffPageEntities()
    Dim swApp As SldWorks.SldWorks
    Dim swDoc As SldWorks.ModelDoc2
    Dim swDraw As SldWorks.DrawingDoc
    Dim swSheet As SldWorks.Sheet
    Dim vSheetProps As Variant
    Dim dSheetWidth As Double
    Dim dSheetHeight As Double
    Dim swAnnotations As Object
    Dim swAnn As SldWorks.Annotation
    Dim vPos As Variant
    Dim offPageCount As Integer

    Set swApp = Application.SldWorks
    Set swDoc = swApp.ActiveDoc

    If swDoc Is Nothing Then
        MsgBox "No active document."
        Exit Sub
    End If

    If swDoc.GetType <> swDocDRAWING Then
        MsgBox "Active document is not a drawing."
        Exit Sub
    End If

    Set swDraw = swDoc
    Set swSheet = swDraw.GetCurrentSheet

    ' Sheet dimensions are in metres (SolidWorks API internal units)
    vSheetProps = swSheet.GetProperties2
    dSheetWidth = vSheetProps(2)   ' metres
    dSheetHeight = vSheetProps(3)  ' metres

    offPageCount = 0
    Dim report As String
    report = "Off-page annotations found:" & vbCrLf

    ' Check annotations on the sheet (not inside views)
    Set swAnnotations = swSheet.GetAnnotations
    Dim i As Integer
    If Not IsNull(swAnnotations) Then
        For i = 0 To UBound(swAnnotations)
            Set swAnn = swAnnotations(i)
            vPos = swAnn.GetPosition
            Dim x As Double, y As Double
            x = vPos(0)
            y = vPos(1)
            If x < 0 Or x > dSheetWidth Or y < 0 Or y > dSheetHeight Then
                report = report & "  " & swAnn.GetType & " at (" & _
                    Format(x * 1000, "0.00") & "mm, " & _
                    Format(y * 1000, "0.00") & "mm)" & vbCrLf
                offPageCount = offPageCount + 1
            End If
        Next i
    End If

    If offPageCount = 0 Then
        MsgBox "No off-page annotations found on current sheet."
    Else
        MsgBox report & vbCrLf & offPageCount & " item(s) found."
    End If
End Sub

Notes on this macro:

  • GetProperties2 returns sheet dimensions in metres (SolidWorks API internal unit). Multiply by 1000 to get mm for display.
  • This macro checks sheet-level annotations. Sketch entities inside drawing views would require iterating IView.GetVisibleEntities and checking transformed coordinates — a heavier check.
  • Positions are returned in sheet coordinates: origin at lower-left of sheet, X increasing right, Y increasing up.

For a thorough audit, also iterate the drawing views on the sheet and check whether each view’s bounding box (IView.GetOutline) extends beyond the sheet boundary. A view that sits partially off-page may have all its annotations at valid coordinates but still export off-page geometry.

The Fix

Manual cleanup

  1. Zoom out to see off-page area.
  2. Click on visible off-page entities and delete them.
  3. For sketch entities: right-click the sheet in the Feature Manager, choose Edit Sheet, then draw a selection box over the off-page area and delete.

The “Edit Sheet” distinction matters: the drawing has two modes — “Edit Sheet” (for annotations and sketches on the sheet) and “Edit Sheet Format” (for the border and title block). Off-page sketch entities accumulate in “Edit Sheet” mode.

API-based cleanup

Once you have identified off-page entities via the macro above, you can extend it to call swAnn.IDelete on out-of-bounds annotations. For sketch entities, you need to switch the drawing into edit-sheet mode via IDrawingDoc.EditSheet and then use standard sketch entity deletion.

Prevention: set the print area

SolidWorks PDF export has a Plot area setting under Options when using File > Save As > PDF. The options are:

  • Drawing bounds — exports only the declared sheet area. This is what you want.
  • All entities — exports everything, including off-page content.

Verify that your export settings (or your team’s shared export task) use Drawing bounds. This does not delete the off-page content from the file, but it prevents it from appearing in the exported PDF. If the drawing is eventually sent as a .slddrw or passed through another PDF export step, the off-page content can reappear if that step uses a different setting.

The root fix is removing the entities. The export setting is a guard, not a solution.

Why This Matters for Engineering Drawings

Intellectual property leakage. Off-page content is often construction geometry that shows design intent: reference envelopes for adjacent parts, spatial constraints, scratch calculations. If the drawing is shared as a PDF for quoting, fabrication, or compliance review, that content travels with it.

File size. Off-page geometry contributes to PDF file size. Drawings with years of accumulated construction sketches outside the sheet boundary can be notably larger than they should be. For assemblies with many drawing sheets, this adds up.

Downstream toolchain failures. Some automated PDF processing tools — drawing management systems, document parsers, or batch print workflows — operate on the full content stream, not just the visible page. Off-page entities can trigger false positives in parsing steps that expect only sheet-bound content.

Audit and release control. For drawings that go through formal release (ECO, DCN, or equivalent), the PDF is often the released artifact. If the released PDF contains undeclared geometry, it becomes part of the official record. Cleaning drawings before release is both a data hygiene practice and a document control requirement.

CadShift’s PDF export respects the drawing sheet boundary and does not include off-page sketch geometry in the exported output. For teams running batch PDF exports from SolidWorks assemblies — where each drawing sheet gets converted as part of a release pipeline — the difference between Save As PDF and Print to PDF affects which content ends up in the output, and running cleanup before export prevents build packages from carrying drawing-session residue downstream.

For the drawing’s coordinate system and geometry accuracy, the same principle of checking what actually ends up in your output file applies to DXF exports: the SolidWorks API DXF export vs manual export comparison covers how the API export path can include or exclude entities depending on the action flags passed.

Summary

Off-page geometry in SolidWorks PDF exports is a widespread issue that is invisible by design in standard PDF viewers. The data is in the file stream and is exposed by Inkscape, Illustrator, and PDF preflight tools. The causes are mostly drawing-session residue: moved views, loose sketch entities, and off-sheet annotations accumulated over the drawing’s lifetime.

The fix is two steps: use the VBA macro to identify what is off-page, then remove it before release. Set the PDF export plot area to Drawing bounds as a secondary guard. For drawings already in the field, a spot-check with Inkscape on your most-shared external drawings is worth the ten minutes.
