Document Groups

Document Groups let you save the set of documents you work on together and jump between those project contexts in a single keystroke. They build on the Document Switcher and are part of the Professional tier.

The idea

A real job rarely lives in one file. You might have a frame, its fasteners, and a drawing all open at once — and a different set for the next sub-assembly. A group is a named snapshot of documents you can return to whenever you like.

Saving a group

  1. Open the documents that belong together
  2. Open the Document Switcher with Ctrl+Tab
  3. Choose Save Group, give it a name (for example Frame or Fasteners), and confirm

The group is stored in your settings, so it survives restarts.

Switching with tabs

Once you have groups, the switcher gains tabs along the top:

  • A live Open Documents tab (everything currently open), plus
  • One tab per saved group

The keys:

KeyAction
` (backtick)cycle to the next tab (Open Documents → each group → back)
Ctrl + Tabcycle the highlight through the documents on the active tab
release Ctrlswitch to the highlighted document
Escclose without switching

Consistent muscle memory

Group tabs commit exactly like the live Open Documents tab — hold Ctrl, pick a document, release to switch. Backtick only changes which tab you’re looking at; it never switches documents on its own.

Tips

  • Name groups after the task, not the files — Frame, Hydraulics, GA drawing — so the right one is obvious mid-job.
  • A document can belong to more than one group; groups are just saved lists of references.
  • Groups pair naturally with the Command Palette: switch context with a group, then drive the work from the keyboard.
